Grassland Restoration 1

Grassland Restoration

Friends of the Prom is supporting the grassland restoration project on the Yanakie Isthmus, where historic grazing pressure from cattle, rabbits, deer and overabundant native herbivores has severely degraded the Coastal Grassy Woodland. Decades without an appropriate fire regime compounded the damage, allowing Coast Teatree to invade and dominate, shading out the diverse groundlayer plants that once characterised the ecosystem.

FOTP are now supporting grassland restoration on the Isthmus, where the careful reintroduction of fire—combined with reduced grazing pressure—is enabling longabsent small herbs and grasses to return. This recovery is slow but visible, signalling the gradual restoration of a landscape that had been pushed far from its natural condition.

We have planted grasses, collected seeds, removed weeds and monitored grazing activity on a range of sites. The small group of regular volunteers enjoy the range of tasks, seeing the resulting changes in the landscape and learning by working with the rangers leading the program.
